May 2013 Goals

It is hard to believe that April has passed, it was a busy month with beautiful weddings, engagement sessions, and bridal sessions filling up lots of our time. There were definitely some very busy days, but also some time that we took to relax and enjoy the gorgeous spring weather. Even though we were very busy, I pushed ahead in my goal to read more, and I think I will definitely be passing my goal of 12 in 12 very soon. I am reading book 10 right now! I guess I should probably set a new goal, but I am not sure what it should be yet. What do you think?

I am continually amazing at the power of setting goals and keeping yourself accountable. It is so powerful, especially when you are posting them publicly. You can read this post to see how I set my goals.

This Momentary Marriage is the BEST EVER. Excited for you to read it! =]

You have a busy month ahead, but I know you can do it! I love that you shared both personal and professional goals. I tend to only goal plan for my professional life, and not my personal one. Thanks for the inspiration!

Kristin’s Book List | April 2013

I read such great books this month, and I have a whole order of new books on its way that I can’t wait to dig into. I have a feeling I am going to surpass my 12 in 12 and I am totally fine with that. Now that I have set aside some time to read, I am just loving it! And of course since I have been soaking up lots of books, I am always looking for great suggestions for non fiction books. Here is what I read this month.

The Christian Mama’s Guide To Parenting a Toddler | Erin MacPherson

It is hard for me to believe that I can even say that I am the Momma to a toddler…when did that happen? So I was really excited when I had the opportunity to get a free copy of this book to review for Thomas Nelson. This is such a fun book. It isn’t deep parenting advice by any means, but more real and humorous advice from a mom who has been there. She compiles ideas on everything having to do with raising a toddler from how to deal with bedtime and tantrums, to how to get your kids to eat healthy. She never came across as if her way was the only way which was so refreshing, and I loved that she subscribes to the theory that you need to do what works for your family. It was light hearted and fun, and if you have a toddler you will definitely enjoy it.

Seven | Jen Hatmaker

I think I can easily say that this was my book of the month. I wasn’t sure what to think going into it, and I had just heard so much about it. The book is phenomenal, and really struck a chord with me. The premise of the book is that the other seeks to eliminate excess in 7 areas of her life : food, clothes, spending, media, posessions, waste, and stress. I just loved seeing her heart for the Lord as she wrote about her struggles in these areas. The book is written in almost a blog style with daily entries, and it was so honest and real. She talks plainly about how she is feeling as she seeks to eliminate some excessive things from her life. The book is just refreshing and in many ways the boost I needed to clean out my closet, spend a bit less time on Facebook and focus on what really matters instead of letting my time and energy be soaked up by the meaningless. Couldn’t recommend the book enough, and I will definitely be reading her book “Interrupted” soon. Go read this book.

The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing | Al Ries & Jack Trout

This book might not seem to totally fit with my usual inspirational non-fiction, women’s books, and parenting guides. But, I am always trying to read something to make myself a better business woman. This is just one more aspect of my life. This book was so good. It is small and I read it in less than 24 hours because it is such an easy read. The authors discuss so many things that I perhaps already knew, but hadn’t applied to our business. Such great advice on leadership, business and marketing your business. I loved that they used recognizable examples from famous companies to prove their points. If you are in business and want to know how to set yourself apart this is a great, quick read.

Grace Based Parenting | Tim Kimmel

I have been wanting to read this for several months, and as Stella entered the toddler phase it seemed like it was time to dig into this. It was a very good book, and though I didn’t agree with his application of everything it was such a good reminder for me to look to God’s relationship with His children as the perfect example for how to parent. I am so grateful that God gives me grace and mercy, and it was a good reminder to do the same as a parent. I was very intrigued with his explanations of different parenting styles, and encouraged to look at what God really says about parenting, not just what I have heard or assumed.

What did you read this month?

Those sound great! I’m working through the famous Outlander series (book 6 I think now). Not at all similar to what you’re reading! Haha

I can’t wait to see your review of Gretchen Rubin’s books “The Happiness Project” and “Happier At Home”. Those were phenomenal and so inspiring.

Happy Reading! :)

Just finished 7. Reading Interrupted now. Love it!

I’ve heard so many good things about “The Christian Mama’s Guide”. I may need to check it out soon. :)

A Day Off and a Beautiful Friend

You may have noticed that I took the day off from blogging on Friday. We spent the day with an old friend who came to visit from Florida. I have a hard time taking a day off, because I like to be consistent, but then I realized that I didn’t have enough time and some things are just more important. Ever been there? Realized that sometimes the things that are stealing our attention away are just not that important. Such a good reminder for the start of the week.

And here is a little peek at the mini session that we did with Rebekah on Friday. We spent the day eating and shopping around Dallas, and then stopped for a few minutes before the rain came. She is gorgeous inside and out, and though I am sad that she is so many miles away, I am glad that we were able to spend the day together.

How to Choose The Perfect Dress

Every girl dreams about “The Dress”, and I admit we get excited to see the dress at every wedding we shoot! When I wanted to do a post about finding the perfect dress I knew that I had to ask Megan at De Ma Fille for a little help. De Ma Fille is the most adorable bridal boutique, and Megan who is the owner of the shop is one of the sweetest people ever! If you are still looking for your dream dress, or some fabulous accessories, go check out her shop, you won’t be disappointed! Here are some of Megan’s tips for finding the perfect dress along with some photos of her and her adorable boutique:

First, brides need to invision what they see themselves wearing for their big day, and what they think they would like to have. When a bride goes to her first appointment to try on wedding gowns, it is important for her to try on different styles of dresses. Most brides come in with that one dress idea, but they might actually love another style even better! It is important to be open, and it would be better to try on a style on and know you don’t like it than to wonder. However, this does not mean try on the whole store, haha.

It’s important to only bring those whose opinions matter the most. This is so that a million different opinions don’t come flying at the bride. This can overwhelm the bride and then she can’t decide on anything!

As the brides try on dresses, she needs to wonder if she is comfortable, do a little dance test ;), and is it HER personality! Can she see herself getting married in this dress?

We do allow pictures in our store, so it is helpful for the bride to go back and look at what she has tried on; this can knock out a few contenders. Try your favorites on one more time. We always ask what they love about each dress and this can lead them to just think about one dress ONLY!

When a bride can’t decide on the first day, then they need to go home and look over pictures. They will then start dreaming about one dress only!

Thank you again Megan for guest blogging for us! We love you, your shop, and hope this article will be a blessing to many many brides!!!
