Joy In Christ Devotional Journal Presale

I am so excited to share this piece of my heart with you all. It has been on my heart to write a devotional for years, and the Lord made it clear in the past few months that this was the time. This devotional journal covers the books of Philippians and Colossians, two of my favorite books of Scripture. The title is Joy in Christ, which is my hearts message. That no matter what you are facing, whatever happiness or deepest sorrow, as believers we can ALWAYS have Joy in Christ.

Joy in Christ-4

Each of the 33 days in this journal has an assigned portion of scripture, a short devotional, and plenty of space to journal what the Lord is teaching you. It is my prayer that this journal will help you cultivate a deep desire for Scripture, and a more intense love for our Savior.

We are running a presale through Saturday, May 10th. Journals are $15 each with group discounts listed below. The journals will be shipping by May 23. If you order during the presale you will receive a set of memory verse cards that correspond with the study for free. All orders received before Saturday at midnight will receive the free set of cards. There is no need to enter a code or add them to your cart, unless you wish to purchase additional sets.

Reflections on the First Day

Yesterday more than 400 of you joined in for the first day of the #lampandlight May Scripture challenge, and shared photos on instagram and Facebook. What a blessing it was to see my news feed flooded with pictures of open Bibles. My heart was encouraged as I read what God was teaching you all, and some of you posted things that my own heart needed to hear yesterday.

Last night I was thinking about how many of you shared Scripture yesterday. Over 400 is a lot of people sharing Scripture, but then I started thinking about how many people saw what was posted. How many feeds did those pictures show up in? How many hurting hearts read words of comfort? How many seeking hearts saw Jesus?

This challenge is all about getting in God’s Word, and making Scripture a priority in our lives. It is about making habits that make us more like Christ. It is also about comforting those that are hurting, and being lights in this world.

If you haven’t started the challenge, don’t feel like you are behind, just join right in. I know that if you spend a month in Scripture that it will change you, and it just might change someone else too.

If you want to learn more about the challenge, you can read about it here.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

I am so glad you issued this challenge Kristin. I was originally going to do another study for the month of May going through a book on writing & creativity. But when I sat down to study a verse that’s been on my mind this week, I found the Lord calling me to obedience. To only do those things which He has asked of me. And although I’m sure that other study would have been great, it wasn’t something He had asked me to do. I was trying to do it in my own strength. And because I believe my writing comes only from Him, going ahead with that study, mustering my way through, would be a mistake. But this challenge is something I definitely feel Him calling me to. So I will be doing a deep study on obedience this month. Thank you for the encouragement you bring. I’m looking forward to seeing where He takes us this month!

I’m so excited about this. I’ve needed a challenge and a form of accountability to get me going!

May God be glorified!!

Preparing for The Scripture Challenge

The May Scripture challenge starts tomorrow! I am so excited to have so many of you join me, and I can tell that you are excited by all the posts, comments, messages and emails I have been getting about the challenge. I even chatted this week with my dear friend who I consider to also be a mentor and prayer warrior and she let me know that I even had a 60 something lady joining in with us. So thankful that Scripture unites the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the broken and the thirsty.

I just wanted to give you a little encouragement today of the importance of being in Scripture, and encouraging each other with God’s Word. I recently finished studying Philippians as part of special project that you may have seen glimpses of on instagram. I can’t tell you how encouraged I was by that little book to keep my eyes fixed on the purpose of spreading the Gospel, and having joy as Paul did through all suffering.

Yesterday my sweet friend Jessica posted on FB that she was feeling down and had been hurt by some people, and asked the ladies in her life to remind her of some Scripture to encourage her heart. I shared with her how much the book of Philippians had meant to me, and told her that I thought it would encouraging to her. This morning I woke up with a heavy heart. I got on Facebook to see what was going on, and I saw a new post from Jessica. She was quoting some of the verses in Philippians that I had pointed her too.

But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;
 So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;
And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
Philippians 1:12-14
The Scripture that had comforted me, I gave to her, and then when I needed it she gave it right back to me. Isn’t our God amazing. Scripture is powerful, and it is such a joy and an honor to be able to encourage each other with the Word of God. You may feel like in sharing Scripture with the challenge that you are clogging up someone’s feed, but you do not know whose hurting heart will be encouraged by God’s Word spoken through you.
So…here is a recap of the challenge! Take some extra time today to pray and ask God to help you in this month to know Him more, and to encourage your heart and the hearts of others along the way.

The Challenge:

  • Read scripture every day in the month of May.
  • Share a photo on instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #lampandlight so that we can encourage each other on the journey and inspire others to make Scripture a priority.

How to get ready:

  • Decide what you are going to read. I recommend choosing a book of the Bible and starting at the beginning, but if you are already in a reading plan or going through a study you don’t need to choose something else.
  • Prepare your heart. Ask God to encourage your heart throughout the month of May, and instill in you a love and desire for God’s Word.
  • Ask a friend to join you. I will be here to cheer you on, and will be checking out the hashtag often, but it would be great to ask a friend or a few to try to commit with you so that you can encourage each other.
  • If you aren’t sure how to study Scripture, you can read this post about how I do it.
  • Share the image below on Facebook or instagram and ask friends to join in.
  • You can also share it on Pinterest using the Pinterest button at the bottom of the post.scripturechallenge

May Scripture Challenge and a Giveaway!

It has been so exciting to see how many of you are excited to participate in the May Scripture Challenge! I have decided to do a little giveaway to thank everyone for participating in the challenge. When I thought about what I wanted to giveaway, I didn’t have to think too hard. I have been using my sweet friend Val’s prayer journal for about a month now, and I adore it.

DSC_1231Photo from

It has helped me so much to make my prayer life a priority and to write down the things that are on my heart. I try really hard to add anyone to my journal that I tell that I will be praying for. I love the different sections that it has to prompt prayer requests such as  praying for the world, our nation, our loves, our friends, Those who have hurt us, and ourselves. It also has a page to record answered prayer and a place to write Scripture. I am giving this away because it is something that I love, and something that has helped me a ton!

There are a few ways that you can enter!

Like my brand new Facebook page!

Follow me on instagram!

You will also get another entry for every time that you tag  your time in Scripture with #lampandlight on Facebook or instagram! That will add up to be a lot of entries, and is another great encouragement to stay in Scripture.

If you need a refresher on the May Scripture Challenge, you can read that post here.

Why Theology Matters

I hope that I didn’t lose you with the title. Theology isn’t the most popular topic these days, but it is important.

Theology is the study of God. Our personal theology is what we believe about God.

A lot of people view theology as something that is very academic and only for those in seminary, or pursuing a Phd. Theology is for everyone though. Because Theology is what we believe about God, everyone has a theology, it just may not be well thought out, or based on Scripture as it should be.

Theology matters because what we believe about God, affects what we do.

If our theology tells us that God is good, we can trust Him in times of suffering.

If our theology tells us that God is all knowing or omniscient, we can trust that He sees so much more then we can see.

Our theology should be the basis for which we judge cultural issues, not what is popular, or what we feel.

When we read the Bible, we should be reading to learn God’s Word. Over and over in Scripture we are commanded to study God’s Word, and yet many Christians only interaction with God’s Word is from Sunday sermons or inspirational reading that hardly mentions Scripture. How can we be prepared to face the trials that will undoubtedly come in this life if we are not in God’s Word? God does not command us to be in His Word to have one more thing to check off of our to do list, but so that we will be prepared to face this life.

Shortly after we lost Sophia we met with one of Jeremy’s professors to talk things through a bit. He encouraged us a lot, but he said one thing that has stuck with us both. He said, “Let your theology dictate your grieving.” We have had to remind ourselves of that in the past months, and I have realized that we should use that mindset about everything in life. What we believe about God should be the basis for everything we do.

Let your theology dictate who your friends are.

Let your theology dictate how you spend your money.

Let your theology dictate how you raise your children.

Let your theology dictate how you feel.

So as you go through this week, and have to make decisions, let what you believe about God dictate what you do, what you say, and how you feel. Commit to getting into God’s Word and learning more about who God is, and how He desires us to live.

Great post, Kristin! Have you read the book Dug Down Deep by Joshua Harris? If not, I think you’d love it!

Maxine B. Gonzalez

I highlight scripture too! Thanks for your post here! HIS word is truth but the only way you know this is by being IN it!

Ashli Brown

Great Word!!!!

Jennifer Gable Poncavage

It all comes back to who our God is and how well we know him What do I know about my God? There is an excellent book about getting to know who God is by Mardi Collier that I read several years ago that led me to journal and categorize verses about who God is and what he is like as I read through the Bible. SO helpful!

Amanda Jameson

LOVED reading this. SO, SO, SO good! “Let your theology dictate your _____.” What a great thing to think upon and challenge myself with.

Kathryn Smith

Have you heard of Deeply Rooted Magazine? Check them out here –>
They are a publication focused on worshipping God through marriage and motherhood, and they just came out with their first issue! They have a great opening article also about theology and why it’s important to our growth in our Christian faith. You should check it out!

Daniel Devine

I agree Kristen. Everything we are and will become stems from our thoughts about God, even if those thoughts are that he doesn’t exist! Well said.
